Los Angeles, California – The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced on Thursday, December 10th, the nominations for the 73rd Golden Globes Awards. The list doesn’t show a clear front-runner, which makes it difficult to predict the results. The ceremony will be broadcasted live on January 10th, 2016, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and Ricky Gervais will host it.
With five nominations, Carol leads the list. Set in New York around the 1950s, it is a Todd Hayne’s film about a glamorous housewife who falls in love with a much younger woman. Both lead characters, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, are nominated for best actress in a drama. Besides, Carol is up for best film drama, original score and best director.
Following the lesbian affair, four nominations were given to the comedy The Big Short, a film about the 2008 financial crisis; The Revenant, an adventure survival thriller movie about a 19th-century explorer played by Leonardo DiCaprio; and Steve Jobs, a drama about the Apple founder directed by Danny Boyle.
The Martian, a hit film about an astronaut played by Matt Damon who is mistakenly presumed dead and abandoned in Mars, scored three important nominations: best comedy or musical, best comedy actor for Damon and best director for Ridley Scott. The Martian is based on a 2011 novel written by Andy Weir and adapted into a screenplay by Drew Goddard.
Other unsurprising drama nominees were Spotlight, a Thomas McCarthy film nominated for best picture drama, Best Director, and Screenplay; and Room, whose star Brie Larson and screenwriter Emma Donohue received nods.
As for the television picks, they were very diverse and more unexpected than the film nominations. Alongside the highly acclaimed Game of Thrones, Empire, Mr. Robot, Narcos, and Outlander, were the fresh nominees chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in the drama category. Comedies such as Hulu’s Casual and Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent were also nominated. Surprisingly, Rachel Bloom was picked as Best Actress for her CW show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, whereas Rami Malek got a nod for Best Actor.
Other new nominated TV series were Brooklyn Nine Nine and The Affair, which will probably be dropped from the nominations after a year, since the Golden Globes tend to award what is fresh and hot on TV.
Lady Gaga was so excited about her nomination as Best Actress for her performance in American Horror Story: Hotel that she couldn’t stop screaming at her apartment in Manhattan and offered excuses to her neighbors through Twitter.
“I apologize to my neighbors I’m still screaming in my apt in NY! I’m nominated as an actress for a Golden Globe what a dream is this real!” she wrote.
There are so many great films and new series this year that the Golden Globes ceremony will be certainly exciting and uncertain.
