Beloit, Wisconsin – Austin R. Ramos Jr, a 5-year-old boy died on Friday night after he was shot while riding in the back seat of his father’s car in southern Wisconsin. According to the medical examiner, Ramos died from firearm related trauma.
Beloit police say the shooting happened shortly after 7 p.m. near Prairie Ave. and Shopiere Road. Authorities reported that a maroon SUV pulled up alongside them and opened fire hitting Ramos Jr. in the abdomen. The boy was rushed to Beloit Memorial Hospital where he later died. His father was not injured.
An investigation is underway and police say they are looking for a maroon SUV, but they also claim they are not sure how many shots were fired. They have no suspects or even a description of the suspects, besides they don’t know how many people were in the SUV. The vehicle is described as a late 1990s or early 2000s maroon-coloured SUV. Police are now going through surveillance videos from the area in an attempt to get a better description. On their Facebook page, the Beloit Police Department is asking for the public’s help.
“We really ask that our community in Beloit come forward and help solve this crime. We need the support and cooperation of Beloit,” interim Police Chief David Zibolski said.
Alicia Martinez, Grandmother of Ramos said he was an innocent boy taken from his mom, his dad and his whole family.
“This was a five year old baby he’s innocent… I mean he was sitting in the back seat playing his gameboy, riding with his daddy. Somebody’s gotta know something. I hope” Martinez said.
Since February 2015, The Rock County Sheriff’s Office alongside Beloit police began patrolling Beloit streets in what was called the Stop the Violence Initiative after a series of violent acts emerged in the region. The county board in August 2015 approved a $225,000 addition to the sheriff’s budget to help pay for the overtime. Police have said they also are working with federal authorities, and several gun-possession arrests have been announced.
On January 8th Cassini Hill of Beloit was found with multiple gunshot wounds, lying in the middle of Colley Road just outside the city limits. A 14-year-old boy suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound on September 30th during a fight outside Taco John’s, just one block from Beloit Memorial High School. Back in 20144 Cleveland police shot and killed a 12-year-old boy in respond to a report of a person pointing a gun at people. The gun was an air-powered Airsoft gun that shoots pellets and is made to look like a firearm.
