On Monday, Craig Wright, an Australian developer, assured in a blog post to be the creator of Bitcoin, a digital currency that has brought the attention of many government officials and even criminals looking for money laundering resources. The man offered a “digital paternity test” in his statement.
A long time ago, Wright had been involved as a suspect in the investigation to find out who was Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonym created by the Bitcoin founder. However, a statement from Nakamoto denied Wright to be his real name, as reported by Reuters.
In the blog post, the self-declared Bitcoin founder offered his gratitude to those who supported him and the project, and who made some important sacrifices that could have easily turn into nothing.
“You have dedicated vast swathes of your time, committed your gifts, sacrificed relationships and REM sleep for years to an open source project that could have come to nothing,” Wright said. “And yet still you fought. This incredible community’s passion and intellect and perseverance has taken my small contribution and nurtured it, enhanced it, breathed life into it. You have given the world a great gift. Thank you.”
The developer also offered different kinds of evidence that only Nakamoto should have access to, however, many people are doubting his allegation due to some of that evidence could be staged. According to a conclusion from The Economist, who had access right along with BBC and GQ to Wright before his post, they said that Wright could be the founder, but there is not definitive proof beyond reasonable doubt.
Why now?
Wright assured that the reason to come forward was that he wanted to avoid some “misinformation” about Bitcoin. He told BBC that the decision was not taken lightly and that he wanted to be clear that the reason for coming forward was because he cares so passionately about his work and also to dispel any negative myths and fears.
Now, his research and academic work could be released to help people understand the potential of Bitcoin, which according to Wright, is able to change the world for the better. Nakamoto is believed to have about 1 million Bitcoins, about $450 million in exchange, so if Wright is actually the creator he should have that amount into his account.
