DJI released a new UAV called the Phantom 4 Advanced on Thursday, April 13. The drone maker released the unmanned aerial vehicle to boost its lineup of cutting-edge drones.
The Phantom 4 Advanced has many features of the Phantom 4 Pro drone, DJI’s successor of the Phantom 4 Drone, which was released in November 2016.
The company says that the new Phantom 4 Advanced is perfect for filmmakers who want the form factor of the Phantom 4 Pro drone but at a lower cost. DJI says that the new Phantom 4 Advanced is an affordable way to capture aerial footage.
Phantom 4 Advanced can shoot 4K videos at 30 and 60 fps
The Phantom 4 Advanced features a more potent camera and precise controls to allow filmmakers capture aerial imagery. The drone’s onboard camera is similar to Phantom 4 drone’s camera with certain upgrades. It has a 1-inch, 20-megapixel sensor, and a mechanical shutter.
The new camera can record 4K videos at 60 frames per second. The Phantom 4 Advanced supports 30 fps H.265 4K videos and 60 fps H.264 4K videos, at 100 Mbps bitrate. Meaning, no matter what frame is being used to record the video, it should look detailed and at a high resolution. But regarding sensors for obstacle recognition and avoidance, the previous Phantom 4 Pro has a better system for doing so.
The Phantom 4 Advanced is equipped with five obstacle sensors whereas the Phantom 4 Pro is powered by six. Also, the base model of the Phantom 4 Advanced only has downward and forward obstacle recognition.
“Equipped with the FlightAutonomy system made up of 5 vision sensors, forward-facing obstacle avoidance system, dual-band satellite positioning (GPS and GLONASS), and ultrasonic rangefinders, the Phantom 4 Advanced is able to hover precisely in places without GPS and fly in complex environments,” explained DJI in a press release, according to Tech Times.
New DJI drone retails at $1349
Apart from the obstacle sensor system, there are other similarities between the Phantom 4 Pro and the Phantom 4 Advanced drone. Both drones are equipped with intelligent features like Active Track, Gesture and Tripod, TapFly, and Draw.
There’s a top-end version of the new drone, called Phantom 4 Advanced+ which comes with a 5.5-inch, 1080 display that’s been incorporated into the controller. The screen brightness is twice that of other gadgets which make the drone ideal for outdoors. Users will also be able to expand the drone’s storage capacity with a microSD card. The Phantom 4 Advanced supports memory expansion of up to 128 GB, and it has an extended flight time of up to 30 minutes.
The company announced that the Phantom 4 Pro would be discontinued on April 30. After that date, they will stop manufacturing the drone, and they will be removed from stores. However, DJI added that they would continue to offer after sales for Phantom 4 Pro users.
The new drones –base model and top-end model- are already available for purchasing on the DJI website, but the company will begin shipping after April 30, when the previous model is discontinued. The Phantom 4 Advanced costs $1349 and the Phantom 4 Advanced+ retails at $1649.
