Only after 6 months of the terrorist attacks in Paris, early this morning, 2 explosions struck the departure hall of the Brussels airport and one more struck the metro station in the capital city. At least 30 people were killed during the terrorist attacks and more tan 120 were injured according to Belgium’s Federal Prosecutor.
Just this last Friday policemen caught the most wanted man in Europe, the principal fugitive of Novembers terrorist attacks in Paris, Salah Abdeslam, along with four other accomplices. This is for sure a response of the terrorist group after the arrests.
The events happened as following, two explosions struck the Brussels’ airport leaving 11 people dead and at least 35 injured at about 8 am this morning. It is believed that at least there was one suicide bomber in the events. An hour later, a third explosion hit the Maelbeek metro station, an strategic location in the capital city near the European Union headquarters, where at least 20 people were killed.
Witnesses in the scenes describe the horror and panic lived at the chaos of the bomb attacks. The sounds of the explosions, glasses shattering all around the place, dust, blood and intense screams of despair. In the airport, people could hear men scream Arabic words before the first explosion. Only 10 to 15 seconds later, the second explosion was heard.
“The first detonation, very few people got panic(ked). The others didn’t realize what happened, or they looked around. But the second explosion was much more heavy – panic, crying and everywhere this dirty dust, like from concrete,” said Ralph Usbeck, who was in the airport to catch a flight to Florida at 8 am, according to the National Post
After the attacks, terror alerts are on its highest peak now and security has intensified along the whole country. Border security has tightened up, flights have been cancelled along with increased security in airports, subways are closed, and there is extreme surveillance on the city streets. This increased security is not only taking place in Belgium. France, England and almost every country in the continent have taken radical measures to increase their security measures after these events. On the other hand, European Prime Ministers and Leaders have already held security emergency meetings.
Presidents from all over the world have pronounced their solidarity with the Belgium government. President Barack Obama showed its solidarity with the country from Havana, Cuba early this morning, expressing his sincere condolences and support to fight terrorism. As well as the French Prime Minister, Manuel Valls, that stated that Europe was “at war.”
