An American Classic
Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. was founded in 1969 by Dan Evins, who initially developed the restaurant as a plan to improve gasoline sales –Evins was also a sales representative for Shell Oil-, the first restaurant opened in Lebanon, Tennessee.
The restaurant and gift shop was a success and in the early seventies the company leased land on gasoline station sites near interstate highways to build restaurants and had the option of gas pumps on-site.
When in the late seventies gas shortage became common, the firm started to build restaurants without pumps. This way, surely and slowly Cracked Barrel distanced itself from its origins and focused on its restaurant and gift sales revenues.
Its menu is based on “traditional Southern cuisine” and is suppose to resemble an old-fashioned general store through its appearance and décor.
