Emma Stone is the latest Hollywood superstar to be honest about the gender pay gap surrounding the movie industry, echoing fellow actress Jennifer Lawrence.
For Stone, men and women should be treated equally and “paid fairly.” Nonetheless, she claimed she has been “lucky” not to be affected by this. Stone, aged twenty-seven, met Andrew Garfield, thirty-three, on the set of 2011’s Spider-Man reboot. They soon became a couple and dated for four years before their split back in October last year. In her newest interview for Vogue, Stone admitted she “still loves Garfield very much” and that her life after the breakup has had its ups and downs.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have equal pay to my male costars. Not ‘lucky.’ I’ve had pay equal to my male costars in the past few films,” she said. “But our industry ebbs and flows in a way that’s like, ‘How much are you bringing into the box office?’ ‘How much are you the draw or is the other person the draw?’ What are we at [nationally]? Seventy-nine cents to the dollar? There’s no excuse for it anymore,” said Stone.
A La La Land life
Emma Stone was born Emily Stone, on November 6, 1988, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Emily dreamed of being a movie star, and she and her mother moved to Hollywood when she was sixteen. The pair lived in a two-bedroom apartment near the Farmers’ Market.
Stone reminiscences about those times, saying she “was sixteen” and that was the reason she burned incense and had a John Lennon poster on her wall. She used to own a red Volkswagen Beetle, a reliable car that used to take her to her auditions.
To make ends meet, Stone worked for a time behind the counter at Three Dog Bakery, an establishment specialized in dog treats. As such, Stone went for working in a bakery to being Oscar nominated.
Her life is the typical Hollywood dream, and this utopia is the center point of Stone’s new musical, La La Land. The film will be released in December, and so far has obtained wonderful reviews. La La Land is directed by Damien Chazelle, better known for Whiplash.
La La Land tells the story of an aspiring actress, Mia (Stone) and a club owner named Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and their daily lives trying to obtain their dreams.
The musical, for many, reminds of the Golden Age of Hollywood, with the pair dancing, singing and falling in love. Back in August, at the Venice Film Festival, the movie was so well received that the public started applauding ten minutes in.
Stone won the festival’s Best Actress award. The film also won many compliments of the festivals of Telluride and Toronto, and even Tom Hanks stated: “if the audience doesn’t go and embrace something as wonderful as this, then we are all doomed.”
