Started in Mark Zuckerburg’s college dorm room at Harvard since 2004; Facebook has come a long way from its humble beginnings, for that reason, showing its users recognition of their support throughout past years. On Thursday, users will be able to see their own “Friends Day” video, which lasts about one minute long and will appear at the top of Facebook’s news feed.
By posting users videos featuring lasting friendships, photos and memories, Facebook ensures the users satisfaction and validation. However, CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerburg has done this in the past when he marked Facebook’s 11th birthday with a lengthy post on relationships on February 4, 2015.
It appears that now the company has its own holiday on February 4th. According to Tech Crunch the CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, “rather than having this birthday that focuses on us, we should make sure that the world focuses on what’s important.”
Social media giant Facebook announced recent results of a study claiming there’s 3.57 degrees of separation instead of the commonly known 6 degrees. Members of its users database, which sums up to 1.4 billion people, are separated by 3.57 connections, a study published by the company confirms. The company’s scientists developed an algorithm able to accurately say how separated its users really are.
The “6 degrees of separation” theory says that there are six connections separating one individual from anyone on Earth. This theory was supported in various studies, and even as a small-world experiment conducted by Stanley Migram, a researcher at Harvard University.
Although the company has doubled in size from 750 million to over 1.59 billion users since 2011, it continues to plan ahead for the future and whatever it brings for social media. Over the excitement from its 12th birthday Facebook organized a private party at its Menlo Park headquarters, reuniting members from across the globe.
A Facebook’s spokesperson declared, “When people connect, powerful things happen and lives are changed; we see it on Facebook every day, whether it’s an exchange with an old friend that brings a smile to your face or a new connection that changes tour life path, or even the world.”
However heart-warming Facebook statements are, just because people are connected to each other doesn’t mean they express joy for everyone. A study from the University of Houston in 2015 revealed a possible link between depressive symptoms and Facebook use. The fact some Facebook users are more popular than others is quite relevant in this matter, yet a range of displeased members it’s expected.
