Facebook’s new addition: Local market

Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) is launching its own buy and sell craigslist-like feature. According to the company’s product chief Chris Cox, this new addition known as Local Market will provide users the opportunity to sell their old stuff.

Local Market will allow users to search for all types of goods without limiting their search into a specific criteria. This feature will have groups like Household, Sporting, Toys and Books, but this doesn’t mean you won’t be able to filter your search. Another interesting development is that users can set up alerts for these so-called collections in order to stay up to date with new additions.

A report from Business Insider suggests that an easy-to-use button that reads “message to buy” will put you in direct contact with the seller. For Craigslist users, this new interface will be familiar.

Still, Local Market has not been the only new feature developed by Facebook recently. Earlier this year they launched For Sale Groups, which allowed users to list prices and location for their on-sale items. Now the company has recently announced the expansion of its shopping section. Live on-going testing is taking place in Melbourne, Sydney and in Auckland, New Zealand.

It is a mystery as to when this new feature will be available, but it sure is clear that trials are being run by its creators, “We are in the very early stages of testing new ways for more people to easily discover, buy, and sell items with other people on Facebook,” a spokesperson from the company told the journal Mashable Australia.

This marketplace seems like a great evolution for Facebook. Screenshots that were published on AdWeek show the new easy to use interface and give you a sneak peak of what the feature will look like.
