Google just launched its VR software Development kit V 1.0 which it had been providing in beta format. Google’s high Virtual reality platform for Android, Daydream, was announced early this year, and now it has the Daydream VR SDK out of beta ready for downloads with its 1.0 version.
Google continues to push its efforts in the virtual reality arena with the development of a true Virtual Reality SDK which is out of beta, referred to the stages of the software. It is ready for production use.
“The Google VR SDK 1.0 with support for Daydream has graduated out of beta, and is now available on the Daydream developer site,” said Nathan Martz, product manager of Google VR, on the company’s developer blog.
Google: a pioneer in Virtual Reality development
Google is an American multinational technology created in 1998. It specializes in internet-related services and other products that include online advertising technologies, cloud computing, and software. It the most visited website in the world. Google mission is to organize the world’s information making it accessible for everyone.
But Google has long advanced and now is a pioneer in the virtual reality arena, producing low-cost smartphone add-on named Google Cardboard in 2014, they allowed people to use their phones as basic virtual reality headsets but its quality couldn’t be compared to the high-priced alternatives made by Oculus VR or HTC.
However, at the beginning of 2016 rumor had it that Google was working really hard to develop a true VR headset using the tools of its augmented reality Glass headset and Cardboard creation. Additionally, the release of the Android 7.0 Nougat came with a new smartphone VR platform called Daydream.
The SDK update is out of beta
For this Daydream update, Google has created a partnership with Unity and Unreal, thus allowing people to play on a game engine that they really are familiarized with. The update is designed to be used with the Google’s DIY developer kit based around a Nexus 6. However, the company said that this device might reach a thermal limit after a short period of use. Regarding the last, they believed that Daydream-ready devices will be launched later this year.
“Our updated SDK simplifies common VR development tasks so you can focus on building immersive, interactive mobile VR applications for Daydream-ready phones and headsets, and supports integrated asynchronous re-projection, high fidelity spatialized audio, and interactions using the Daydream controller,” said Google in its blog post.
Daydream SDK allows VR developers to control important functions that virtual reality apps need, such as spatial audio, head tracking, stereo rendering, and more. As well, Unity expressed that they have made it easy to switch in and out of the virtual reality mode so the applications can easily expand to the Google VR audience.
Google is currently accepting applications for the Daydream Access Program (DAP) since it wants to work with more developers to create quality content for Daydream.
