Green Day just released a new video for their “Troubled Times” song, and it leaves really clear how they feel about Donald Trump. The song’s video and lyrics make reference to the Civil Right movement, and it suggests that we still have a lot way to go on the matter.
It was no coincidence that the video was released on Martin Luther King Jr day. The “Troubled Times” single features images from the KKK, signs that say “stop racism, islamophobia, and war” and others saying “no border walls.”
“What good is love and peace on earth? When it’s exclusive? Where’s the truth in the written word? If no one reads it” sings Billie Joe Armstrong, Green Day’s lead singer.
Green day is against racist hate
Just days before Inaugural Day, Green Day decided to release the video of its new single “Troubled Times.” It is pretty clear that both the lyrics and the video are their way to protest against Donald Trump, as well as other social problems that are affecting America and the world right now, such as xenophobia and racism.
The American punk rock band released the video on Monday, precisely on January 16, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The video features images of the KKK rallies and Mr. Luther King Jr. crying over the current situation in America. They mock Trump through the image of a man talking to the masses. The man has his face partially covered and is wearing a hat with “make America great again” written on it.
The band has previously expressed their disagreement with the president-elect during a performance at the American Music Awards in November 2016. As well, the band also changed the “American idiot” lyrics from “subliminal mindf–k America” to “subliminal mind-Trump America” during their performance at the 2016 MTV Europe Music Award, which happened one day before the presidential elections.
“No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA,” Armstrong repeated throughout a performance of “Bang Bang.”
Green day was formed in 1986 by singer Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt. They have sold more than 85 million records worldwide and won 5 Grammy Awards. On 2015, they entered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility. In October 2016, they released their 12th studio album “Revolution Radio.”
Billie Joe: ‘Today we celebrate love and compassion more than ever’
In the video, they included people holding signs that rejected the construction of a border wall, the islamophobia, and racism, which were, in a certain way, promoted during Trump’s presidential candidacy. It also shows images from the fight for gender equality.
The visual features scenes from the Civil Rights Movement and the Trump’s animated version were created by Manu Viqueira and David Rodriguez Simón. The video ends with a mushroom cloud.
This is just one of many anti-Trump protests in America. Several people have taken the streets of different cities to protest against the president-elect. As well, many high-profile Democrats have refused to assist in the Inaugural day event.
