Indiana – Offensive guard Donald Thomas has been released from the Indianapolis Colts along with 11 other players, which cuts down the roster to 76. The release of the 29-year-old comes as a shock since he was recently reactivated from the “Physically Unable to Perform” list by the Colts. He is now a free agent.
His Injury History
Thomas had been signed by the Colts back in 2013 to a four-year, $14 million contract, but his injuries put in jeopardy his career.
On the second week of 2013 he tore his right quad and left biceps, missing the rest of the season. Last year’s season the offensive guard tore the same squad, putting a big question mark on his reliability. By letting Thomas go, the Colts save $3.5 million, an important figure that probably facilitated the decision. Finally, the Colts cut him loose
Thomas has played over his-eight-year NFL career 45 games (23 starts) with Indianapolis, New England, Detroit and Miami. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Back in 2012 he was ranked 21st among 81 guards by Pro Football Focus with a plus-9.9. He got a plus-0.3 grade in pass blocking and a plus-7.6 grade in run blocking.
One more to go
The Colts need to make one more cut by Tuesday at 4 p.m to accomplish the 75-player deadline. The team has cleared up 14 roster spots by waiving 12, waiving-injured one and putting another on injured reserve.
