Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: APPL) introduced the new iPhone 7 on Wednesday, which comes with an enhanced camera, a new home button, and a battery with a longer lifespan.
The iPhone 7 camera has a 12MP sensor with upgraded low-light capture technology. The iPhone 7 Plus features twin 12MP cameras, able to achieve a 2X high-quality optical zoom. But one of the most prominent changes is that the latest smartphone from Apple does not feature a headphone jack. The new wireless headphones for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, known as AirPods, were revealed on launch day and they connect to the device via Bluetooth.
Going wireless? Not welcomed by all
IPhone 7 users are not forbidden of using standard headphones, as the company will include an adapter for the iPhone 7’s Lighting port to enable 3.5-mm input connection. The headphones are also able to detect whether a pod is on the left or right ear, and they are designed to work with Siri through motion sensors.
Users have heavily criticized Apple’s decision to get rid of the headphone jack, but the company circumvented the issue by packaging the Lighting adapter for an additional $30. However, users won’t be able to charge the phone when using the adapter. The AirPods are compatible with every Apple product.
One of the most common critiques about the iPhone 7 using wireless headphones is that users would lose them more easily. Thousands have signed petitions for Apple to retain the headphone jack, mainly due to it being a standard in manufacturing and that wired headphones do not need charging.
Users have complained about the decision, arguing that the ill-advised decision to rescind from the headphone jack will force the company to replace their new AirPods, which will lead to a great loss of revenue and a significant production of “electronic waste,” as it is stated by the online petition for Apple to retain the 3.5-mm jack.
It is not the first time that Apple tries to eliminate “outdated” inputs and connectors from their devices. Apple was one of the first companies to stop producing floppy and Ethernet ports for their computers, as wireless connection and USB ports started to dominate the way users shared data and information.
Peripherals manufacturers have stated that there are very few accessories that work with the new Lighting port. Although it is a matter of time until more compatible products are released to the market, there appears to be a general sensation of rejection for Apple’s decision of forcing its users to use their new headphone and peripheral system.
The iPhone 7 comes in five colors: Glossy black, silver, gold, jet black, and rose gold. The jet black finish will only be available for the 128GB and 256GB versions. Preordering for the iPhone 7 begins on September 9. Shipping begins on September 16.
