Oscar-winner Jared Leto will be producing a film based on the vanguard artist Andy Warhol, along with big Hollywood names such as Michael De Luca and Terence Winter.
The biographic work will be based on a 1989 book called Warhol: The Biography written by Victor Bockris that tells the artist’s life in depth. Leto, who acquired the book’s rights along with De Luca, will be portraying the artist in the movie.
The project seems lucrative and promising since Michael De Luca’s work includes the acclaimed biopic Captain Phillips and The Social Network both movies that did well with the critics.
Terence Winter is also a big name in the film industry, with scripts such as The Wolf of Wall Street who got him an Academy Award nominee, Winter is also known for being the producer for HBO’s The Sopranos and Boardwalk.
According to initial reports Leto and De Luca had acquired the right’s to Bockris book a long time ago and the project has been on-going for a while. The book will be the start-point for the biographic film.
Leto and Warhol
It doesn’t seem like a surprise that Leto will portray Andy Warhol in the movie since the actor has been known for playing multiple roles and adapting to his character regardless of the demands.
In 2013, Jared Leto won an Academy Award for interpreting a gay and drag queen man in the film Dallas Buyers Club, starring Mathew McConaughey and has recently played the role of Batman’s villains as The Joker in Suicide Squad. Leto has been categorized as an androgynous actor, not for his looks on reality, but for how he portrays his characters, which is a characteristic that goes well with Andy Warhol’s life.
Nor the date or the rest of the cast for the film has been announced by Leto and his colleagues.
Warhol is the artist that openly criticized the American consumerism, the value that was given to celebrities, superficiality and invented the phrase ” fifteen minutes of fame,” the artist is known for portraying in his paintings common American objects, such as dollar bills and the famous Campbell’s soup can in a characteristic way.
Andy Warhol started in the artistic business around the 1960s and slowly became one of the most recognized artists in the industry, with his strong critics and personal style.
Warhol was also controversial when it came to sexuality. He became one of the first public figures to come out as gay at a time when homosexuality was not seen well in society and remained a tabú.
The artist opened a studio gallery called The Factory, which it is well known in popular culture and is where the artist received his wicked shot from Valerie Solanas, a schizophrenic fan that was obsessed with radical feminism.
During the last stages of his life, Warhol was seen at New York’s top club Studio 54 partying and being social with Hollywood’s a-lists. The artist trained other generations of painters such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and died in 1987.
