It appears that Kate del Castillo received money from the drug lord Joaquín Guzman, best-known as El Chapo, who was arrested last week by the Mexican Navy. Sources seem to suggest that the actress is going to declare about a money that she invested in Honor del Castillo, her own tequila factory, according to declarations from the Attorney General of Mexico to the newspaper El Universal.
The tequila company owned by the actress, who has been accused of money laundering, is registered in Delaware. It was confirmed that Mexico has been working alongside the United States in order to exchange information since last year Kate Del Castillo started conversations with El Chapo’s lawyers.
Arely Gómez González, the head of the attorney general of the republic, explained to El Universal that last year she talked to the Mexican president, Enrique Peña Nieto, and they concluded that if El Chapo was recaptured, he was going to be extradited to the United States.
Gómez also added that on New Year’s Eve, the drug lord was accompanied by the deputy Lucero Guadalupe Sánchez, who is also being investigated by Mexican authorities, since she apparently falsified a document in order to visit El Chapo in the maximum security prison El Altiplano, in April 2015.
The renowned newspaper El Universal quoted an interview where it is evidenced that Kate del Castillo was already requested to declare. The actress from La Reina del Sur is currently living in the U.S., however, she can attend her call in the Mexican consulate.
“Are there any traces which indicate that the drug lord El Chapo provided economic resources to the tequila factory?,” asked an interviewer from El Universal. “Yes, there are indications, but, as a I mentioned, we cannot be sure about it yet. We have an ongoing investigation that prohibits me to give you more details about it. That being said, we need legal certainty… We need to be sure about who provided the airplane and who paid it,” answered Arely Gómez González about the case.
It was also declared in the interview that the United States government has not requested to interrogate El Chapo. When talking about Sean Penn, the official said that the actor is not being investigated for meeting El Chapo in a Mexican jungle to interview him for Rolling Stones magazine. In fact, the encounter helped the navy find the location of the drug lord.
El Chapo, who has been described by culture analysts as a Latin Robin Hood, and who was recognized by Forbes as one of the most powerful man on Earth, moved around Mexico with huge amounts of money, in December. It was reported that after he escaped, he used to change his place of stay every three days.
“Thank you for your support over the past days. Not surprisingly, many have chosen to make up items they think will make good stories and that aren’t truthful. I look forward to sharing my story with you,” wrote Kate del Castillo in her official Twitter account, after first rumors that related her to El Chapo appeared last week.
The Mexican official concluded that several people had protected El Chapo before he was recaptured. She explained that many cared about him and sacrificed their lives in order to save him. The Sinaloa cartel is still being investigated by authorities who seek to give an end to the cartel related to big amounts of money laundering and organized crime.
