Kit Harrington was tasked with keeping what could have been the biggest secret in the history of television, but he couldn’t avoid revealing Jon Snow’s fate to a cop who pulled him down for speeding. The Game of Thrones star revealed on Friday’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that the police officer was one of the five privileged people who were told from him that Snow would live in the sixth season.
The 29-year-old actor recently told Entertainment Weekly that he only told his parents, brother, and co-star and girlfriend Rose Leslie about the hard-to-keep secret. He also opened up about a long goodbye letter Sophie Turner wrote to him since not a single castmate knew the truth. But Friday’s revelation made the studio audience and host Jimmy Fallon crack up.
Harrington told Fallon that he was going over the speed limit on his way to his parents’ home and was “being a bit naughty and going over the speed limit” when the officer stopped him and gave him an ultimatum. It was totally up to him.
“You can either follow me back to the police station now where I’ll book you in, or you can tell me whether you live in the next [season] of Game of Thrones”, the cop told the actor, who couldn’t stop laughing.
The police officer was serious and warned Harrington that whether he took him into the police station depended on his answer about the fate of Jon Snow, which is yet another sign that Game of Thrones has become a global phenomenon.
“I looked at him, and went, ‘I’m alive next season.’”, Harrington told Fallon.
The very pleased officer told him ‘On your way Lord Commander. Keep the speed down this far south of the Wall’, as the actor said on last night show.
The long-kept secret left the audience in awe as it came to light on screen
The world trembled when Snow, who was murdered at the end of season 5, came back to life in the second episode of season six. Harrington told Fallon that he had told his parents straight away, even though he was supposed to keep his lips sealed after having been sworn secrecy by the series’ writers.
Still, he told Entertainment Weekly that he would like to say sorry for spending nearly two years telling everyone that he would never come back to the show.
