The Mercedes AMG family is turning 50 this year, and the German automaker is celebrating it with a teaser of the concept of their new model. The official release will take place at the Geneva Motor Convention next week in Italy, but Mercedes has previewed the model with a brand new sketch.
The crucial feature known for this new model is that it is going to be the first 600-hp car in the AMG family, added to the fact that it will be a four-doors saloon vehicle. Its design presents a curve-shaped roof, and it seems like this model will count with most of the hardcore performance capabilities of any of the previous Mercedes GT vehicles.
The release of this model comes just a month after the premiere of the first AMG hypercar, which is a limited model that is inspired in the F1. The AMG car, dubbed “X290” is the third in a production series that already presented the SLS model and the other existing GT vehicles.
According to the specialized website Autocar.com, this new model is considered the brainchild of the head of AMG. This car is oriented to compete with other three existing vehicles in the market: Porsche Panamera, BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé, and Audi A7/RS7
Evolution of the X290, the latest AMG model
The first time that the automobile world heard about the possibility of this model being launched was in 2012 when Mercedes-Benz through its AMG division filled a body of patent applications. However, back in the day, the plan was mainly to redesign the existing SLS model by adding two gullwing doors and a pair of small, rear-hinged rear doors.
Several months later, the initial plan for the X290 started to change as the automaker transformed the idea into a more GT model. Many of the styling characteristics and general features of the AMG sports car apparently are set to be included in the new model, in addition to a very similar mechanical package.
However, Autocar.com reports that the vehicle will not be based on the bespoke aluminum structure platform present in the GT existing model, which is a key characteristic of the car.
Mercedes-Benz’s modular rear architecture (MRA) is fundamental for the basis of the new four-door model. This system has already been used in other models like the C 63, the E 63 and the S 63. Allegedly, this architecture has been modified to be more suitable in the AMG model with added features that have been described as “unique.”
Among other characteristics present in the newest AMG, there is the lightweight materials below the body structure, including aluminum and hot-formed high-strength steel. This innovation is oriented to the reduction of the overall weight of the vehicle and the enhancing of its motor power.
The AMG family is undergoing a great sales moment worldwide, and Mercedes hopes that with the launch of models such as the turbo 3.0-litre V6-powered C 43, E 43 and GLC 43, the AMG division can reach the 80,000 units worldwide.
