Meryl Streep and ‘La La Land’: Highlights of the Golden Globes

The acclaimed actress Meryl Streep and the popular movie “La La Land” were the highlights of the 2017 Golden Globe Awards that took place at the Beverly Hills Hilton.

On the one hand, the 8-time Golden Globe winner and 3-time Oscar winner, Meryl Streep, offered a speech that was very polemic because it was, mainly, about President-elect Donald J. Trump.

On the other hand, the fantastic musical from Damien Chazelle, the director of Oscar-winner Whiplash, broke the record for being the most awarded motion picture in the history of the Golden Globe Awards.

When the ceremony was about to conclude, Viola Davis was the responsible for presenting the prestigious Cecil B. Demille Award, which is given to an artist with a notable and outstanding career in Hollywood.

Davis gave a touching speech about how she admired Streep and how she had served as an inspiration for women artists around the world. Then, Streep started speaking about “a bully” who wanted to be in the country’s most important seat.

Streep said that she was stunned by Trump’s performance, as she never mentioned him literally.

She stated hat this performance impressed her: “not because it was good; there was nothing good about it. But it was effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh, and show their teeth.”

She referred to the 2015 incident that Trump had with a reporter with a physical disability from the New York Times who interviewed him, which he imitated.

“It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head, because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life,” Streep said.

It didn’t take too long for Trump to respond to the speech, as the next President said in a phone interview that he was not surprised by Streep’s words. Trump excused himself again about the incident in 2015 by saying that it was a complete misunderstanding.

He also said, while explaining Streep’s speech, that she was a Hillary supporter and it was logical that she said those things. Before the interview, he published a tweet that said that Meryl Streep was one of the most over-rated actresses ever and that she was a “Hillary flunky who lost big.”

‘La La Land’ great achievement

Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” was the big winner of the night as it took home 7 Golden Globes. Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Original Song and Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, are the Awards that this movie won in what it was a record in the ceremony history.

There is only one film that managed to collect 6 Golden Globes, and it was “Midnight Express” back in 1979. With “La La Land” it was set a new record as this musical consolidates as one of the best movies of the year.

The other awarded films were “Manchester by the Sea,” “Moonlight,” “Zootopia”, “Nocturnal Animals,”  “Elle,” and “Fences.”

In the Series category the Netflix original “The Crown” won the award for Best Drama Series (not Game of Thrones, as it was expected) and “Atlanta” was given the Best Comedy Series award.
