Nike raffles off self-lacing ‘Back to the Future’ shoes

Nike announced Wednesday that residents in the United States and Canada now have the chance to get a pair of its new self-lacing sneakers inspired by Back to the Future.

Fans of the series only have to buy a $10 ticket through nike.com/mag or the Nike+ app so they can win one of the 89 pairs. All the money earned through the digital drawing will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, a charity that supports research into Parkinson’s disease. The star of the Back to the Future series created the charity after he was diagnosed with the disease, which affects over 10 million people around the world.

Nike said in a press release that one individual can buy multiple tickets if they wish. That way they will have a greater chance of winning. The drawing begins Oct. 4, ends Oct.11 and the 89 lucky ones will be notified Oct. 17.

In 2011, the Nike Mags were designed for the first time in real life and for a good cause. They did not have the “power laces,” but the company auctioned as much as 1,500 pairs on eBay and rose $4.7 billion over 10 days. A total of $9.4 million went to fund another charitable organization dedicated to supporting research into Parkinson’s disease.

Michael J. Fox received the first pair of Nike’s self-lacing Mags in October 2015. Nike’s live auctions in New York, London, and Hong Kong are scheduled for Nov. 12, Oct. 14 and 17, and Oct. 11, respectively. The New York event will take place at the Michael J. Fox Foundation’s benefit gala, according to an article published on Nike’s website. This gala has been titled “A funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s”.

The next big thing Nike is preparing has to do with adaptive footwear for athletes. The self-tightening HyperAdapt sneakers share the same technology as the Mag and go on sale in late November. This system senses the wearer, and tightens or loosens according to their current need.

“Though it initially shared only a few seconds of screen time with Michael, the idea behind the Nike Mag unlocked something much bigger at Nike. It sent us down an uncharted path of innovation, but it also opened our eyes to our ability to fight some of the world’s biggest challenges. We feel privileged for the opportunity to raise even more awareness for the fight against Parkinson’s,” ,” sayd Mark Parker, Chairman, President and CEO, NIKE.
