Colorado Springs, Colorado – Three police officers were injured in an incident with a shooting situation near Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs, as Commander Kirk Wilson with the Colorado Springs Police Department told reporters.
Kirk Wilson also said police were still in the process of trying to eliminate the threat. However, the department’s public affair division said on their Twitter account the situation was still not stable.
The president and chief executive of Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountain, Vicki Cowart, said their concern is for the safety of their patients, staff and law enforcement. The health institution provides medical care, sexual education, and medical exams.
As the Colorado Springs Fire Department said on Twitter, an active shooter was at the health-care clinic on Centennial Boulevard shortly before noon local time. FBI assistance has not been requested yet.
Sidney Downey, a woman who works at Sally Beauty Supply near the Planned Parenthood clinic, stated to the Washington Post that people inside the store began to hear gunshots at about 11:45 a.m. local time. She said there were so many gunshots it was difficult to even count them.
Nevertheless, it seems the police is managing the situation quickly.
“Cops came flying through the parking lot, they almost hit each other they were driving so fast. We can’t go near the windows. We can’t stop shaking and crying,” another woman told Huffington Post
She added that she heard multiple shots fired and saw an officer go down before she and others went and hunkered down in a back room. It was also reported by officials at hospitals in the area they were waiting for the arrival of four patients and one had a gunshot with him.
Planned Parenthood runs almost 700 health centers throughout the United States. As their official website says, they attend 2.7 million people in the U.S. each year.
Months later, the anti-abortion organization called Center for Medical Progress infiltrated into Planned Parenthood clinics in order to produce evidence that the clinics are selling tissue leftovers from abortions.
Selling tissue leftovers is against federal law but Planned Parenthood has declared the videos Center for Medical Progress provided were edited. They also affirmed they were not violating federal laws.
