Oxygen therapy is getting famous day after day as it proves its effectiveness on fighting several respiratory illnesses. This therapeutic method is on a huge rise as it had a CAGR augment of 7 percent and it is getting more investments in different countries every year.
Among the diseases that the oxygen therapy can combat, there are chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), asthma, obstructive, sleep apnea, and pneumonia. COPD is the most common disease that is treated with oxygen therapy mechanisms, as respiratory diseases in the United States become more usual.
In a recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 40 million people presented evidence of COPD back in 2011. In the same note, almost 6 percent of the New Mexico’s population suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, while in 2011, while the state of Kentucky reported that 9.3 percent of its population had COPD. Next, it was Alabama with 9.1 percent.
Oxygen therapy in the United States
The oxygen therapy market in America is divided by two. First, there is the product type into oxygen source equipment, and second, there are the oxygen delivery devices. The first division is also segmented into oxygen cylinders, oxygen concentrators, and liquid oxygen equipment.
Many factors are producing the rise of this market, among which there is the fact of the low cost per unit of each liquid oxygen system. Also, other factors like power saving and easy mobility of the liquid oxygen devices are making this new market grow enormously.
Right now, the cost of an oxygen therapy session is both expensive and exhausting. A single session of hyperbaric oxygen therapy could cost between $100 and $300 as the time that it takes when added up is between 50 and 60 hours.
Among all the countries in North America, the United States is the country where it is located the biggest market share. The technological advances and the awareness regarding this new medical method are also helping the oxygen market on its constant growth.
Currently, in the United States, there are several companies that are investing in the oxygen therapy mechanism. Some of them are Respironics, Inc. (a Philips company), Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Limited, Teleflex Incorporated, Invacare Corporation, and AirSep Corporation.
A study showed that oxygen therapy helps cord blood transplants
According to recent investigations, the presence of a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO) is fundamental in the umbilical cord transplant process in leukemia and lymphoma patients
Low EPO levels can aid in the patient’s process of regaining the ability to produce healthy blood and cells. In a clinical trial conducted with 15 patients, it was showed that the use of oxygen therapy helped directly as it made the process faster and more efficient.
According to the study, this mechanism is well tolerated by patients as it lowers EPO levels when comparing to patients who did not receive the oxygen therapy. Scientists from the University of Kansas are preparing new investigations that can confirm the benefits of oxygen therapy in this kind of procedures.
