Canyon Barry, son of NBA Hall of Fame Rick Barry, will transfer to the University of Florida next season. Barry. Canyon graduated from the College of Charleston on Saturday with a degree in physics and now as a graduate student, he will be eligible to play for the Gators immediately.
Barry picked Florida over Miami and Northwestern. Also Barry graduated from the College of Charleston on Saturday with a degree in physics and he decided to leave the College of Charleston this spring. He said that he was overwhelmed by the interest from some of the top college basketball programs in the country.
“It was really a humbling experience for me, talking to all the great coaches and getting to visit some great schools,” Barry said.
For Barry it was also a really tough choice, where he picked Florida because of their excellent nuclear engineering program with one of the only nuclear training reactors in the Southeast.
From Cougar to Gator
Barry liked Coach Mike White and all the players. Coach White and Barry both felt that he could make an immediate contribution on the court and help the team chase the goals of winning a SEC Championship and getting to the NCAA Tournament next season.
Barry led the Cougars and the Colonial Athletic Association in scoring this past season with an average of 19.7 points per game. But Barry was limited to 13 games after suffering a shoulder injury in January.
According to ESPN basketball analyst Jeff Goodman, Barry was rated as the No. 3 transfer prospect this spring. There have been more than 500 college basketball transfers this year, according to Goodman. He said that he is really going to miss Charleston, because it has been his home for the past four years.
“Getting to walk on Saturday in the graduation ceremony was special for me. I’ve met so many great people here. I’ll miss King Street, Folly Beach and especially all my coaches and teammates,” Canyon said.
