U.S. – Recently NASA revealed a simulating space mission called Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS) Mission IV. Voluntarily Dr. Sheyna Gifford, a jewish Chief Medical and Safety Officer, joined its 4th NASA experience along with a crew of six. The science journalist will live 12 months inside an isolation dome in Hawaii simulating as if they were on mars. The information was released on NEWSER
Dr.Sheyna Gifford has been involved in researches since 1997, with an extensive study trajectories, Gifford always aims to create solutions and to teach others her impressive knowledge. She’s been involved in 3 more space missions with NASA and she’s responsible for updating the website livefrommars.life that aims to tell how is the simulating experience going.
Take a closer look at HI-SEAS
The mission started last August 28th and it aims to prepare scientist to future long duration mars missions. Along with Dr.Sheyna Gifford, six more people joined and they will live for an entire year in a white dome in Hawaii where the place fits perfectly with what they’re trying to simulate. The 20-foot-tall, 36-foot wide dome is situated on a barren slope and It’s about 8.000 feet above ocean.
The dome is completely fixed to look as if they were actually in Mars. To make this possible, every team member will have to wear a spacesuit when they leave the dome, even if the air conditions doesn’t cooperate. Despite each person is given a private room with a small desk and a sleeping cot, there’s no much space to contemplate some private time. NASA wants to test human interactions to see how it could work in outer space given that in previous missions misunderstandings between crew members have been unavoidable.
As time goes by they will be eating pre packaged food which includes canned tuna and powdered cheese. “It’s about psychology, logistics, science and maintenance. We’re looking at what you need to feed and water people for a year, how much science you can get done and how the crew manages.” said Dr. Sheyna Gifford.
Expectations
Specialized scientists between them a french astrobiologist, a german physicist, an American pilot, architect doctor and journalist, and by last a soil scientist expects to perform a series of NASA-funded experiments that aims to take human-kind into the smallest planet in the solar system: Mars. According to NASA suggestions, 2030 could be the year where humans travel into this unknown land.
Gifford stated her reality through the mission website
“Things will break. We will not. How I know that I just can’t say?. I think it’s because we prefer to laugh more than we like just about anything else. Even science. Even being astronauts for a year during NASA’s longest planned Mars simulation. More than cat pictures, more than the internet, even. Where we’re going we’ll take our cameras to record things, our instruments to affect changes in the environment, and our humor, to keep the whole thing hanging together.”
