Skype for Web now offers calls to mobile phones and landlines

Microsoft just added to the new updated version of Skype for Web the ability to call mobile phones and landlines from the browser, in exchange for some Skype credit or a subscription.

Users now can make more “affordable” international calls from their browser without needing to install at all the app in the computer. The app for web offers the option to dial the number to call and its launch with a simple button, according to a press release made by Skype for Web.

The company also offers some other updated features for Skype for Web, like the improved way Youtube videos show up in the app. If some user sends a Youtube link through Skype for Web, the receiving user will be able to watch it directly in Skype.

For Youtube videos, Skype for Web will show the same options, like volume and resolution, that the original website does with the big difference that the video will not have to be opened outside the messaging service.

In addition, the messaging app also made it easier to connect with users who are not in Skype. Users can create a chat from the Skype for Web that will generate a link shareable with everyone. Anyone who clicks in the link will be a part of the conversation, even if they do not have a created account.

Notifications also had an improvement in the web version. The company added notifications to Skype for Web that inform the current user when a message or a call have been received, even if the person is currently in another browser tab or another app.

From any computer

The beta version of Skype for Web was launched last year as an improvement in accessibility to their users, which, according to the company’s blog, told them they wanted to call and IM when they visited the website.

“Skype for Web is great whether you are using a shared computer that does not have Skype downloaded, or you just prefer using a web version instead of a downloaded app,” said the Skype Team.

The company has made acquisitions in recent months to beef up its messaging offerings. It bought chat app Talko in December of 2015, and earlier this year bought mobile keyboard app maker SwiftKey, as reported by Digital Trends.
