San Diego – During the Comic Con, the video game company SEGA announced that two new Sonic the Hedgehog games are going to be released in 2017. The news was made public during the blue character’s 25th anniversary.
Sonic Mania is one of the projects and will reimagine iconic levels from Sonic’s past games in a 2D platformer that features visuals and gameplay reminiscent of the classic Genesis games, says Gamespot. Sonic Mania will include zones and acts from Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. The game will also introduce new zones.
The Sonic team leader, Takashi Iizuka said at the Comic Con that the Sonic Mania idea came from their fans’ love of the classic Sonic 2D platforms games. He stated that this is the first time Sega host this type of collaboration and hopes everyone will be impressed and delighted by the new title. Iizuka continued and said that the Sonic Mania Project had been a passionate work for the team, and they are excited to share more details about this new experience later this year.
Some of the fans in Sonic’s 25th anniversary got the chance to try out the 2D game. Iizuka said that the fact that the team has a playable game for the Comic Con was a prove of the dedication behind the idea.
The retro-style 2D platformer was developed by SEGA of America in collaboration with PagodaWest Games along with the people behind the Sonic ports on mobile devices, Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley, Gamespot reports.
But Sonic Mania was not all. A second announcement made by the Sonic Team revealed a new adventure to come with both classic and modern versions of Sonic, similar to 2011’s Sonic Generations. The title is still a mystery, but it was said that it would be available on PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo NX for the 2017 holidays.
Nintendo News quoted the Chief Brand Officer of Sonic Pillar and SVP of SEGA of America, Ivo Gerscovich, who said that the Comic Con and the 25th anniversary of the beloved blue hedgehog brought together thousand of fans from different parts of the world. They all came together to get a look at all facets of Sonic from his roots in video games to music, TV, mobile, toys, fashion and more. Gerscovich added that this is only the beginning for Sonic and SEGA of America was happy to see fans celebrating the exciting new direction of the team.
