Many players have been waiting for the virtual reality (VR) set since they were kids; they always dreamed of being inside their favorite videogame. Many VR headsets are during beta testing, one of them is the Occulus Rift which has been tested by many YouTubers and common players, but now Sony has announced its own VR set that will for sure fulfill all of our expectations, or that’s what we expect from the famous company at least.
Sony announced March 15 that its long-awaited PlayStation VR virtual reality headset will be available this October. The goggles will connect to the company’s PlayStation 4 console.
TIME sat down with Sony Computer Entertainment America President and CEO Shawn Layden at the 2016 Game Developers Conference to discuss PlayStation VR. Here are some of Layden’s most interesting answers.
The price
Sony wanted to make sure that they came out with a product that could be available to the mass, 36-plus million PS4 users out there. They think that pricing it similar to the price of a console is the right marketing space to be in. Luckily they have the engineers on board, led by the teams that created the PS4, that are able to realize that product with that quality at that price level.
The gate for a new world and experience
Most of the customers will enter and stay. It’s not something that articulates over time. If you’re wondering if they feel pressure, they always feel pressure, in so far as they always want to deliver to the expectations of their customers. But they are at a really good place. They think that they are announcing it today with a launch release in October to give them that really important time period where they can go and evangelize the VR story. As you can appreciate, as much as they love TIME magazine, just reading the articles doesn’t really tell someone what a VR experience is, until they put the thing on their head.
The Sony VR on the market
They are partnering very closely with their big retail partners to come up with experiential activities over the next six months before launch. They’ll have a big presence at E3, of course, as they always do. And they think you might even see some of their, you know, they have these PlayStation trucks that they send across America to different events, like college campuses or sporting events. They use that kind of outreach to create more opportunities for people to get their hands on it. They really want people to get their hands on it.
