For quite some time, people have known that Lara Croft will be back on the big screen, but as of today, they all know when exactly. Starring Alicia Vikander, the Tomb Raider reboot is scheduled for March 16, 2018. Warner Bros and MGM announced that the new movie about the sexy dual-gun-wielding archeologist will be ready in a couple of years. Comic fans were surprised with the news because a DC movie was already scheduled for that date, but it seems they are having problems, and Lara Croft seized the opportunity.
It is quite often that when someone learns about a “new” movie, it is usually a sequel. However, the studios behind the project really meant it. The actress is different, the approach is different and even the time set is different. In fact, in the few comments the people behind the movie have made about it, they have mentioned a lot the word “reboot,” which could mean they want to start from scratch with an entirely different project, something that nobody has ever seen. Also, they said to be interested in portraying Lara Croft’s beginnings, the story before she became the sexy archaeologist everybody knows.
Lara Croft is beautiful, intelligent, athletic and British. After all, she is a fictional character which means she can be whatever the writers want. Now, finding an actress that can give life to this character satisfying the very exigent gaming community and luring other audiences is a different thing. Yet, the casting crew was lucky because Angelina Jolie decided to join the project. In both movies, she successfully portrayed the British archeologist that always gets what she wants, and everybody loved to see her in the outfit.
The new Lara Croft is an Oscar winner
But this time, the directors want to approach the character in a different stage of her life, in the beginnings. Before being THE Tomb Raider, Lara Croft was an intelligent rookie archaeologist following her dad’s steps.
Alicia Vikander is going to be Jolie’s successor, but she might end up reshaping how people see the character. The 27-year-old actress has a couple of things in common with Lara Croft. She is also beautiful, intelligent, successful and British. Vikander won the best-supporting-actress Academy Award for her role in “The Danish Girl”, a romantic biographical film. She starred “Ex Machina” a science fiction psychological thriller that was released in 2015 where she played an artificial intelligence inserted into a robotic body with a human face called “Ava.”

The challenge for Warner Bros and MGM is to beat the success of the two previous movies. Yes, they were not as successful as Deadpool or the Avengers, but movies about video games are not always successful, and Tomb Raider is among the very few that people actually have liked. However, they have all the tools to make it happen. Also, the last title of the video game franchise was based on the origins of the character, and both gamers and critics well received it.
